And so it begins...
"Fourteen" is one of the few stories that is already completely written for Tales From Memorial Union and while it was the third story written, it is designed to be the very first one in the book.
My screenplay for "My First Year" focused on the central protagonist, 18 year old Craig Hughes and so, I wanted to use him again as the central figure in the novel as well, as he will appear in three stories; this one, another entitled "December Boys" (which is still being written and has grown to almost novel size itself) and the final story, which was entitled "Plastic Ram," and it just may keep that title unlike the full book.
This story was originally written in 2001 and the hard copy of it runs 42 pages long, so for purposes of this site, I will break it up and post it in installments over time. As previously stated, posting from this site will occur slowly, so that I will have the time to clean things up and get them ready for presentation as well as give you ample time to read. So, maybe for the month of June, I might post two sections and move forwards from there.
As for the title, the original title was actually "Expatriate 1970 (14)," something that is explained and makes sense to me but as of just yesterday, I change the title to what it is right now. I have to remember to just keep things simple and furthermore, I was inspired by the Big Star song "Thirteen" (I invite you to listen to that song as I think, overall, the tone and mood of that track is the entire mood of the story).
Oh yes!! Musical references are abound. Some overt, some veiled but they are there.
Well...no more stalling or hiding...here we go...
Wonderful! Keep going!
